Mary Mcgarry Buttemer

After a brief illness, Mary (May) passed away in Victoria, BC, in the presence of loving family. Beloved wife of 63 years to Austin (1926-2013), dedicated mother of Paul (1956-2008)(Amalia Schelhorn) and Anita (Michael Godfrey), and Grandma extraordinaire of Evan, Gwen, Tessa, Clara, Trevor, Ian and Emily. She is predeceased by sisters Etta and Sarah (Sadie), brother William (Bill) and survived by brother David. Aunt May will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Born in Scotland, Mary immigrated to Toronto in 1948 with sister Sarah (Sadie). She met Austin and then married in 1949. Toronto was their home for 40 years. Mary always believed strongly in the power of education, and was a proud employee of the Scarborough Board of Education until her retirement in 1988. The next chapter of their lives opened when they moved to Comox, BC, where they had an active retirement, especially as involved grandparents.
The passing of son Paul in 2008 was a source of sorrow for Mary until her death.
She spent the last chapter of her life in Victoria, living as close to family as possible.
A Celebration of Life will take place 2-4 pm on Wednesday August 22 at Filberg Lodge, 61 Filberg Rd, Comox, BC. Interment of Austin and Mary will take place at Courtenay Civic Cemetery on Thursday August 23 at 11 am. Condolences can be left at https:// earthsoption.com.
