Mary Patricia Murphy

April 29, 1926 — May 6, 2013

Mary Patricia Murphy (nee Cunning) passed away peacefully on May 6, 2013, in Victoria, B.C. She was born on April 29, 1926, in Regina, Sask. Pat is survived by her loving daughter Suzanne Murphy of Victoria; her brother Bill of Vernon; grandchildren Joel (Xinh), Shannon (Vincent) and Chad; great-grandchildren Kayla, Cole, Lotus, Lila, Zayden and Rayne; her daughter-in-law Cathy; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Lea; her parents Muriel Robinson and Robert Cunning; her brother Bob (Jean) and sister Dorinne (Dewain); her son Robert Shane Murphy; and her daughter-in-law Christina. Pat attended Benson School in Regina and graduated from Scott Collegiate in 1942. She then served as an apprentice pharmacist and, after training at Regina General Hospital, became an RN in 1947. Pat worked at the Red Cross Outpost Hospital in Loon Lake, Sask., and married Leaburn Murphy in 1948. The family lived throughout western Canada and settled in Vernon, B.C., in 1965. After Leas death in 1969, Pat moved briefly to Victoria while her children attended college and university. She then returned to Vernon and worked at the Vernon Army Cadet Camp. In 2004, she retired to Victoria. Pat was funny, smart, quirky and strong-willed. She was a voracious reader (two books weekly!), and her greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. She truly represented the eight TRODSPED virtues of the St. John Ambulance Maltese Cross: tactful, resourceful, observant, dexterous, sympathetic, persevering, explicit and discriminating. A devoted mother, Pat was someone you could always count on. She will be sorely missed by her extended family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Mount Edwards Court Care Home and the Cridge Centre for taking such wonderful, loving care of Pat over the past several years. A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria Womens Transition House by clicking above on send gift.
