Matthew Iain Thomas MacLean

Matt was born in Montreal December 22, 1974. Beloved son of Ingrid and the late Iain MacLean, dear brother of Angus (Jess), and loving uncle of Kyle, Caitline, Emily, and Samuel.

Matt died in Sooke March 15, 2026. He attended Cordova Bay Elementary and Claremont High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Victoria. Matt worked as a gardener and was Interested in Japanese landscaping after visiting Japan. He was a talented musician, wrote music and lyrics, and started several bands “Camel Clutch” and “Shabboleth” to name two. He played drums, guitar, and vocals.

Matt was a caring, intellectual man, interested in people, and had many deep, meaningful friendships. He had a special connection with his nephew Sam enjoying long hikes, laughing and talking for hours.

Matt became interested in Buddhism and took refuge in 2024, and enjoyed the Vancouver island Zen Sangha. He loved his retreats at the Lions Gate Buddhist Priory in Lytton.

Matt is sorely missed by family, friends, and his beloved cat Tia.
