Maureen’s Life Journey
November 22, 1954 – March 31, 2024
Maureen was born in Winnipeg but grew up in South Vancouver. She was the youngest of 3 children (Val and Richard) by her parents Frances and Danny. During her highschool years at David Thompson Secondary School she spent alot of time playing field hockey (sorry to her French and Home Economics teachers). She worked part time at Woodwards to support her frequent drives down to Santa Monica in her MG.
After highschool she attended Vancouver Vocational Institute to be a licensed practical nurse. She worked at Grace, Burnaby General and Royal Columbian hospitals. When she wasn’t working she kept very busy playing more field hockey with the Vancouver Rowing Club. Moe liked to travel with the team visiting San Francisco and travelling with her work friends to Honolulu.
In 1980 she decided to take a break from nursing and joined CP Air reservations in the Bentall Centre in downtown Vancouver. Her timing was both good (as she met her husband Doug) and bad as the economic downturn was just starting. They moved in together after both being laid off from CP Air.
Next it was off to Victoria in 1983 to rent with Doug’s friends. Maureen first found work at the Shelbourne Medical Treatment Centre and luckily happened to run into her old friend Dianne Olson who had worked for the Coroners Service on the Mainland before transferring to the Victoria branch and becoming the Regional Director. Maureen accepted Dianne’s job offer and her next 12 years would turn out to be the best ever, career wise.
Maureen and Doug married on October 5, 1985 with Cam and Stacey following in 1988 and 1990. Maureen’s mom Frances moved to Victoria to help with the kids and family life was good. Moe continued field hockey and also discovered dragon boating which she did for years with the Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club, participating in many competitions and festivals.
While continuing to work with the Coroners Service she volunteered with the P.A.R.T.Y. program, Greater Victoria Police Victim Services as well as medical aide at the Victoria XV Commonwealth Games.
Moe left her position as a Coroner and switched gears into another career by successfully earning her Funeral Directing and Embalming License in 2009. The embalming aspect of the job seemed to compliment Moe’s curiosity about caring for those who couldn’t speak for themselves (the deceased) as well as the welfare of their families. She enjoyed working in the back room at First Memorial Funeral Services until an on the job injury to her shoulder. This was her final job.
After her retirement, followed by Doug’s in 2014 they embraced the retired life and being empty-nesters cruising to Alaska as well as venturing to Australia, California, Arizona, New York, Washington D.C., Mexico, Nicaragua (twice) and around Europe to France and Dublin.
Even after the pandemic hit in 2020, Doug and Moe went on a few road trips throughout B.C. to visit family and friends and to explore their “backyard”.
Sadly, Maureen was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 to which she slowly succumbed. Her infectious and head strong spirit never wavered, even at the end.
She was an exceptional wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend who will be sorely missed by many. She will always be remembered as not giving up and staying true to herself.
