With the support and kindness of the staff and volunteers at the Victoria Hospice, peacefully Megan passed away after losing her courageous battle with cancer. Loving wife and soulmate of Jeff Crane and mom to beautiful daughter Florence. Megan was the beloved daughter of Sue & Terry Duncan and cherished sister to Kimberley Duncan (Tracy Lavell). Meg will be missed by many of her closest friends and relatives.
Megan was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario where the vast majority of her time was spent involved in sports. Throughout high school she enjoyed both field hockey and rugby but finally settled on volleyball. At the time, she was playing for the Ottawa club team which had her travelling and competing in tournaments throughout Ontario and Quebec.
Meg's passion for volleyball followed her to Acadia University (Wolfville, NS) where she competed at the varsity level for the Axewomen's volleyball team and earned her degree in Recreation Management. It was during this time in Wolfville where Meg found her Ninjas, and formed what would be some of the most important relationships in her lifetime.
When Meg returned to Ottawa she began her career with the federal government and completed a Master's in Public Health, while working for the Public Health Agency of Canada, and subsequently Health Canada and Global Affairs Canada. Megan was a proud and effective public servant, contributing to impactful projects related to public health and international development. As well, Megan took on active roles in a variety of non-profit volunteer positions with organizations in her community dedicated to improving the environment and community health. Her continued devotion and passion for community was evident through her time spent at the Ottawa Little Theatre, where her passion for theatre was matched, only by her love for the OLT family.
In 2016 Meg's love for nature and the outdoors took her permanently to Vancouver Island, where she, Jeff, and their dog Cré¼, could often be seen hiking, surfing, climbing, camping or off on an adventure in their Westfalia. In June 2018, Meg gave birth to their only child Florence and 3 short weeks later, received her breast cancer diagnosis. Meg's strength, determination, and love for her daughter proved to be instrumental in her fight against her diagnosis. In that time, Meg underwent a lumpectomy, received aggressive forms of chemotherapy, radiation, and a complete mastectomy. She moved with the family across the country to St. John's, Newfoundland and continued to be a loving, nurturing full-time mother to Florence. After one short year, they returned to their life with their "Island Family" in Victoria, where Meg spent the remainder of her life surrounded by love, the trees, and the ocean.
Above anything else, Meg truly respected and cherished the relationships she built. Loyal would be an understatement when describing the kind of friend she is. Throughout each stage of her life and whatever adventure she was on, Meg would always find herself surrounded by amazing people who she could count on and vice versa. Her love for life is what made her a great friend when you were seeking fun, support, motivation or even the hard truth. Megan was one of those rare people whose intellect and curiosity burn so brightly. Conversations with her elevated you; inspired you to speak ideas out loud that you'd never realized you had; and her words would sing to you in your mind for days afterward.
At Meg's request there will be an outdoor celebration of life to be held this coming summer for family and friends.
