Merla Roldan Picardal

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Merla Roldan Picardal, who left us unexpectedly and peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Victoria, British Columbia. Born on February 24, 1956, in the Philippines, Merla’s life was marked by love, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Merla was a proud mother of three children: her daughter Geraldine (and grandson I), her son Earl (partner S, and granddaughters Ar.P and Al.P), and her son Joshua (partner J, and granddaughter PLP). She also shared a deep and loving partnership with whom she lovingly referred to as Malco (Ted) cherishing their time together and caring deeply for him and his daughters. She was a loving sister and member of a large international family that will continue her legacy of helping others.

A proud and tenacious member of the nursing community, Merla was passionate about helping others and did so fastidiously in a variety of disciplines during her working years. Her journey was one of incredible resilience—putting herself through nursing school as a single mother newly immigrated to Canada, all while working full time to ensure her children had the best opportunities in life.

Merla’s spirit was vivacious, bright, and filled with joy. She was quick with a joke and always carried a positive light that uplifted those around her. Friends and family describe her as kind, generous, and tenacious—a woman of strong values who always prioritized the needs of others. Whether she was walking in nature, enjoying the seaside, cooking for loved ones, window shopping, or enjoying her abundant good luck, Merla brought warmth and energy to every moment.

A small private viewing for immediate family will be held on December 20, 2024. In the new year, friends and extended family will be warmly invited to join in a celebration of Merla’s life, where her memory and legacy will be honoured together.

In lieu of flowers, The family requests donations be made in Merla’s honour to the BC Children’s Hospital, a cause that was close to her heart.

And let your perpetual light shine upon her,

May her soul rest in peace.”

We are comforted by the thought that Merla is now in eternal peace, her love and kindness forever etched in the hearts of those who knew her.
