John Michael Cavers was always happiest on the water and in the woods. He loved the many rivers and lakes he canoed and sailed across in Manitoba and Ontario. As a child he was much more interested in being on the river or in the bush than he was in school. To his children and grandchildren, he recounted canoeing adventures on the Bloodvein River with his brother Lanny, or while in high school accompanying Bill Mason along the Bird River. When living in England, and without a boat, he spent his free time climbing crags and hiking the moors. Later in life, summer vacations were often spent on multi-week canoe trips through the remoter reaches of Quetico and Algonquin Parks. Throughout his life he studied the canoe and other watercraft and would talk at length about the advantages of various models. For a few years in his 40's, he traded canoe trips for summers sailing with his family in the Lake of the Woods on his 22ft yacht, Canny Lass. Michael was born in Pine Falls on April 23, 1940. He was a small-town boy who loved the world and the adventure it held. All his life, he followed his own path. He left his province of birth to attend the University of New Brunswick and work the DEW line in northern Canada. He later worked in England and business took him across Europe and Asia. He later seized a number of opportunities to return to Europe to travel with his wife Jenefer or visit his son Stewart in Japan. Throughout his life he maintained close ties with friends and associates in England, Portugal, Italy, and Japan. Michael always saw the best in people and endeavored to know everyone by name. He was an unmatched raconteur whose knowledge and sense of humour was greatly appreciated by all. The frequency of visits to his home by friends from across the world, and those that he often only met briefly, was a testament to the respect he always showed others and the integrity of his being. Michael loved his family as he loved life. He was a devoted husband and father and was always ready with a warm hug or story for his grandkids. He was a kind and generous man with a wonderful smile, loved by all who knew him and greatly missed by all. John Michael Caver passed away peacefully at 10:17am on June 14, 2021.
