Michael Jerome Lawless

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Jerome Lawless, age 65, of Victoria, BC, and Halifax, NS. Michael died in Victoria on August 18, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Michael was born in Victoria, BC, on November 3, 1960, the fourth of seven children of Brian Lawless and Marie (née Earthy) Teitge.

He will always be remembered for his big smile, infectious laugh, natural charm, love of life, adventures by motorcycle, and his special affection for dogs — particularly his beloved Kode. He had a natural ability to connect with people and made lasting friendships wherever life took him.

After graduating from Oak Bay High School, he earned a diploma in Real Estate Studies and Marketing Management from BCIT. He went on to build a long and rewarding career in the field, working first in Vancouver and later in Halifax. The East Coast became his home, where he spent most of his career and enjoyed many happy years of his life.

One of the most important guiding influences was his 46-year involvement in AA, where he found great meaning in mentoring newcomers struggling with addiction. AA gave him a sense of purpose, a supportive community, and a shared moral compass to strive toward. He always made time for conversation and connection and encouraged others to live life ‘one day at a time’.

Michael was predeceased by his father, Brian Lawless, and his stepfather, Stanley Teitge. He is survived by his mother, Marie Teitge; his six siblings, Christa Green (John), Mark, Celina Mason (Dexter), Bernard, Daniel (Lynn), and Shaun (Maria Gruending) and his five step-siblings, Keith Teitge (Reyja), Kevin Teitge (Victoria Wellwood), Doug Teitge, Darilyn Teitge Alexander (Chris), and Val (Norm Person). He will also be lovingly remembered by his many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital Palliative Care Unit and the Victoria Brain Injury Society for the support, care and kindness they showed Michael. Gratitude and hugs to all his many friends, old and new, who brought light and meaning to Michael’s days. We are especially grateful to Dr. Gheis, Anna Golovkina, Connie McKenzie, and Michael’s dear friend and loving companion, Robin Granewell, for the guidance, friendship, love and comfort they provided during the final years of his life.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Uplands Golf Course, Victoria BC, on October 4, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Rest in peace, Michael. Watch over us with your loving smile.
