Dr. Miriam Stewart

It is with sadness and reverence that we announce the passing of Dr. Miriam Stewart from this life into the arms of Jesus. Miriam was born December 1, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario and died after a remarkable lifelong battle with lung disease and severe allergies, on July 27, 2023 in Victoria, British Columbia.

Miriam was a pioneering and internationally-renowned health researcher, an adoring grandmother and mother, a voracious reader and a lover of the ocean - be it Atlantic or Pacific! She pursued a life filled with family and friends, a helping profession and Christian faith. She was predeceased by her parents Ross and Dorothy Mortimer of Toronto, and her beloved granddaughter Thea Anderson.

Miriam is survived by her daughter Dr. Evelyn Stewart, Evelyn's husband Michael DeMarni, grandchildren Chiara Demarni, Emanuelle Stewart Ouellette, Lorenzo DeMarni, Gabrielle Stewart Ouellette, and Luca McKamey-DeMarni. She is also survived by her daughter Shauna Stewart Anderson, Shauna's husband David Anderson, grandchildren Aidan Stewart Anderson, Noah Stewart Anderson, Samantha Larabie Anderson, and Hunter Larabie Anderson. Miriam is also survived by her sister Diane Lugsdin, brothers Paul and Ralph Mortimer, and their families.

Miriam was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, academic and mentor. She will be deeply missed.

A celebration of her life is planned for the afternoon of June 9, 2024 in Victoria, with a service at St Matthias Church at 1pm (PST), followed by a reception at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, a venue she often enjoyed with friends and family. We recognize that travel to the event may not be possible for many and as such, an option to participate via livestream for the service and zoom for the reception will be available.
