With heavy hearts and immense sadness the family of Muriel MacLeod (nee Herbert) shares of her passing on Monday, August 7th, 2023. Muriel died peacefully in her home at the age of 81, with her family at her side.
Muriel is survived by her loving husband of nearly 58 years, Dr. Patrick MacLeod, her devoted children Kim, Ian, Heather, and Scott (Sara), and her very beloved cat Seamus. Also left to grieve her loss are her sister Carol Sears (Lex), grandsons Angus, Callum, Kaleb, Adam and Oden, multiple extended family members and lifelong friends. Muriel was predeceased by her parents Mary Herbert (Verbeke), Victor Herbert, and her brother Stanley Herbert.
Throughout her life, Muriel shared her love for all animals. Once wanting to be a veterinarian, the home was always filled with at least two cats and the occasional rescued bird, or squirrel and even a parrot! Dogs especially brought a twinkle to her eye.
Muriel had a bright mind and excelled at a variety of part-time jobs throughout her life. Her favourite of these was at J.R. Antiques in Victoria, with her cherished friend Garry. Mom loved to collect fine china and antique silverware and especially loved Moorcroft Pottery.
Muriel also loved to play bridge, forming many treasured friendships over the years. She delighted in particularly “great hands”, occasional “wins”, and the wine they enjoyed during a break. Muriel played her last game on July 28th of this year. Her family wishes to thank her bridge ladies for accommodating her respiratory and mobility needs by coming to the home to play, but mostly for the dear friendships they shared with her.
Muriel enjoyed hobbies of crocheting and cross-stitch. With crochet, she progressed from simpler blankets to intricate blankets and doilies made with fine cotton. Eventually, cross-stitch became her favourite pastime. She made countless frame-worthy pieces, some of which are proudly displayed on the walls of her home and those of her children’s homes. She particularly loved following patterns based on the artwork of Gustav Klimt.
Muriel worked the hardest at being a mother and a housewife. She shone at keeping the family home inviting with her cooking and especially her baking. Mom made chocolate chip cookies, pies, jam, and varieties of bread to nourish us all.
We are all forever grateful for everything she did for us. Heartfelt thank you to the Victoria Palliative Care team, as well as to Dr. Aboulhosn, and Dr. Janicki.
