Neil George Banera (1949 – 2026) passed away peacefully at Hospice at Royal Jubilee in Victoria on August 13th. Proud and loving father of Jeff (Ashley) and Kevin and Gido to Connor, Owen, Roman, Caz and Avie, he also leaves behind his wife Livia and members of the Banera clan, the Haluk family, the Warcimaga family, and the Meret family.
Originally from Winnipeg, Neil’s interests spanned astronomy (telescopes, star-gazing), geology, Ancient Egypt, Yogananda, classical music and Game of Thrones. As was fitting, the date of his passing coincided with the Perseid meteor shower and the total eclipse of the sun. Now his journey has taken him to the stars.
Until retirement, Neil’s professional engineering career focused on water resource related issues, including working for government in Zambia, Manitoba and B.C. Over the years he greatly enjoyed golf, football (Blue Bombers), coffee with friends and working on various construction projects. He will be missed by friends and family.
With many thanks to staff at Hospice, the Cancer Clinic, and Royal Jubilee Hospital involved in providing caring and comfortable care to Neil.
For those so inclined to make donations these may be made to non-profit organizations supporting children’s recreational activities.
An informal memorial will be held to honour Neil on 27 September 2026 in the Minstrel Gallery at the Fireside Grill from 1:00-4:00pm.
