Pauline Lesley Long

October 3, 1936 — August 21, 2019

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a much-loved wife, mother, friend and teacher, Pauline Lesley Long.
Pauline passed away on August 21 st , 2019 at Kiwanis Pavilion in Victoria BC, in the company of many who loved her.
Pauline leaves to lovingly cherish her memory her daughter Lesley (Will), son Cameron (Kelly), and grandson Griffin, as well as large network of family and friends including her nieces Vicki (Doug) Dacre and Karen (Hugh) Trask, and lifelong friends Gerri (Gordon) Ormiston, Lori (Alec) Palombi, and the Kinneard Family (John, Dyala, Jennifer, Stephanie and Phillip).
Pauline is predeceased by her husband Jack, parents Frank Darley and Gwen (Jim) Clewett, and brothers Phil (Kay) and Reg.
Born in Hull, England on October 3, 1936, Pauline and her family immigrated to Canada in the 1950s. Pauline obtained her teachers training at Victoria College (now University of Victoria), and taught elementary school in Cranbrook, Victoria and Nanaimo, eventually leaving teaching in 1966 to focus on raising a family. Pauline returned to teaching in the late 1970s, and played an important role in the beginnings of the English as a Second Language Program on the Lower Mainland.  Pauline worked tirelessly as an ESL teacher for Surrey Delta Immigrant Services and Kwantlen College for several decades, and developed numerous programs, practicums and teaching tools over the years; she retired, rather reluctantly, in 2001.
In 2003 Pauline and Jack moved to Vancouver Island, and settled in Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula. In retirement Pauline continued to find many pursuits to keep her active mind busy: volunteering for the Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's Societies; participating in the SAGE Study Group for numerous years; singing with the Getting Higher Choir; travel to England, France and Italy; organizing and participating in several book clubs; attending the annual Sechelt writers conference (to name but only a few!).
Pauline will be forever lovingly remembered for many things, including her contagious enthusiasm for learning, her passion for creativity as seen in her numerous artistic endeavors, her always fabulous fashion sense, her beautiful singing voice, and probably most significantly, her wonderful ability to organize and motivate people in order to make great things happen wherever she worked and lived.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Kiwanis Pavilion for the care they provided during the time Pauline resided there, particularly the compassion shown by Trina in Unit 3a, who really went the extra mile and will be forever remembered for it.
