Phyllis Louise Busby, Your warmth, kindness, humour, love, generosity, strength, and the joy of being in your company will be missed by all who knew you. You have an incredible way of bringing calm, joy and humour to each moment you occupy in body and in mind.
Phyllis passed away in the early morning of August 28th 2021. She was able to spend her last days in the loving company of her family surrounded by photos of her memories. We played her favourite songs and shared stories of the many ways in which she has brought joy to this world. Phyllis was born in Fort Vermillion on September 15, 1930. Growing up with her older siblings Dorothy, Harold "Harry" and Don and parents Harold and Winnifred Edgecombe. Family was always of central importance and a great source of joy in her life, spending time with her nieces and nephews, and taking road trips and going on adventures with family as years passed.
True love was found at a YMCA dance in Edmonton when Phyllis met Lorne Busby. Lorne always recounted the memory with tenderness and love when he first met Phyllis looking so beautiful in a polkadot dress. The couple was married on August 2nd 1958; their love, a celebration since the day they met. They moved to Kenora, where they continued to create "home" leading to the next chapter of their story. In 1964 they were blessed with their daughter Karen. Phyllis and Lorne took great joy, pride, celebration and love in raising Karen. They moved between Kenora, Prince George, then settled in Victoria. As a family they enjoyed road trips, camping, gardening, music and taking holidays together.
Phyllis and Lorne moved to Devon Alberta to be close to Phyllis' family. Karen and her partner Bruce were married and had two children, Katrina and Kevin. Phyllis and Lorne were exceptional grandparents, making the trip over to the island each winter to spend Christmas and the early spring together. In the summer's they welcomed the family in Devon where many memories were made and much fun was had. Phyllis and Lorne also loved making trips to Las Vegas to take in the shows and music, as well as get comfortable at the black Jack tables. Later they moved back to Victoria to be with family again, always at the centre of their story. Phyllis and Lorne's collective love for each other and for their family has always been a huge source of inspiration, and telling of their dedication to the things that are most important in life. The simple joys of listening to records and dancing around the living room, reading books together, appreciating the pots of plants and flowers growing on their small balcony, Sunday dinners with family, reminiscing of memories made and things to come, and all the small yet significant gestures they shared displayed the joy they found in one another and in life.
Life changed when Lorne passed away in 2018, it was very challenging for everyone. Phyllis though remained strong in heart and we believe she carried Lorne with her every day that followed, a bond unbroken- true love between souls.
Phyllis stayed in their home as long as she was able, and moved to the Sunset Lodge in 2020 where she had been attending a social group and had established community. She continued to bring so much joy, kindness, love calm and humour to her family, her neighbours and all the care staff who knew her there. Our sincerest appreciation also extends to the wonderful and compassionate care she received in her time there, we know that you loved and cared deeply about Phyllis as well.
A true lover of family, music, garden visits, a good laugh and love itself. We will miss everything about you, and we thank you for all that you have given and taught us in your time here.
We love you, Give Lorne a big hug from all of us, "But I know we'll meet again some sunny day". â¥ï¸
