Robert Douglas Rowland

Robert Douglas Rowland August 22, 1943 - February 21, 2020 With deep regret and sadness we announce the passing of Robert (aka Rob or Bob) Rowland in his home on February 21st at the age of 76. He is sadly missed by his loving wife Colleen; his beloved children Karen and Joseph (Laurine); cherished grandson Matthew; and extended family and friends. Rob was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and moved to Vancouver Island to pursue a career with the Department of National Defence (DND). He grew up with a passion and love of chemistry, astronomy, history and science, a gift from his father Cecile, a Doctor of Dentistry. While working full time, he graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree and proudly served DND as a Defence Scientist for 42 years before retiring. The way he passed was just like the way he lived: he wrote his own rules, paved his own way, and challenged the status quo to forge a future determined by him alone. Whether in his personal or professional life, what appeared to be impossible to overcome to most, he quietly and methodically was able to achieve. He was a rare combination of someone who had a love of science, of life, and a firm understanding of what was important - the simplicity of living and sharing his life with the people he loved and those he called friend. At his best when confronted with fixing things that were broken, it didn't matter how difficult the challenge or the number of pieces to the problem. Rob either had the tool to fix [that] or he would invent the solution to solve [whatever]. He faced all of life's challenges with the same conviction and determination. His golf game mirrored his scientific mind, choosing to master the ‘short' more difficult aspects of the game rather than become that guy who could hit the ball a ton but never stay in the fairway or sink a putt. He was also a very proud and devoted member of the Masonic Order for many, many years.
There will be a small private family service held to lay Rob peacefully to rest. Family, friends and colleagues will be invited to gather at a later date for a memorial service to remember Rob's life and pay respects to his family. Details to come.
