Ruth Anne passed away February 22, 2026, after a lengthy hospital stay at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia. Born on January 23, 1945, in Victoria and raised in Port Renfrew, Ruth carried the spirit of Vancouver Island with her throughout her life—resilient, community‑minded, and deeply connected to the people around her.
Ruth is lovingly remembered by her daughter Mariah, son‑in‑law Keith, and her grandchildren Derian ( Amanda), Brendan, and Kyanne. She was “Gigi” to her great‑granddaughter Abigail, a role she cherished with pride and joy. She will also be missed by her sister‑in‑law, Joyce, her many nieces and nephews, and the great‑nieces and great‑nephews she affectionately referred to as her “greats”—always quick to remind everyone that she was already a great auntie in every sense of the word.
Ruth was the last surviving member of the seven Hill Kids—Rose, Betty, Bill, Doreen, Jack and Ted—children of Ruth Marie and Jake Victor Hill. She carried their memories with her and spoke of them often, keeping their stories alive.
Throughout her life, Ruth embraced many careers and opportunities to serve. She worked as an elementary school teacher, a restaurant manager, and later retired from the provincial government. Retirement only expanded her commitment to community service. She volunteered with Girl Guides and dedicated many years to Emergency Social Services in View Royal and Colwood, where she served as a director and a steady, compassionate presence during times of need. Ruth was recognized with the Queens Jubilee medal for her dedication to ESS and the community.
Ruth was an active and devoted member of the Juan de Fuca Senior Centre, holding numerous board positions, including president. She was also a long‑standing and deeply engaged resident of Cameo Co‑op, where she lived for 45 years and built lifelong friendships. Her involvement in Toastmasters and the Golden Gavel further reflected her love of connection, communication, and personal growth.
A passionate and prolific quilter, Ruth attended countless retreats and belonged to several quilting groups. She poured her creativity into every stitch and contributed many charity quilts over the years, including pieces for the Quilt of Valour program—work that combined her artistry with her generous heart.
Ruth was a friend to many across the province, and her absence will be felt widely. She leaves behind a legacy of service, creativity, leadership, and kindness—woven together like the quilts she crafted with such care.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the care teams at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, the View Royal Fire Department, the paramedics, and the RCMP who supported Ruth over the past few months. Their compassion and professionalism brought comfort during a difficult time.
She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Details of the celebration of life will be shared at a later date
