Passed away on 24 October 2022 at the age of 73 years. She is survived by her husband
Luis Merino; two sons: Christopher James Merino and Demian Luis Merino and his wife
Kimberly Holmes; four grandchildren: Jonah, Amelia, Aiden, and Brinley; her sister Dr.
Janet M.C. Burns; and friends and extended family throughout Canada and Mexico. She
was predeceased by her son Adan Merino, her parents Gerald James Burns and Audrie
Lorraine (Vincent) Burns.
She was born in Calgary, AB in 1948. In 1968 she took up Fine Arts studies at the
Instituto de Allende in San Miguel, GTO Mexico where she met her husband, Luis. They
returned to Edmonton, Canada in 1970 for the birth of their first son, Christopher. The
other two sons, Demian and Adan, were born in Victoria. Sandra and Luis moved to
Victoria in 1971 where they continued to pursue artistic careers. Sandra was employed
as an assistant in the Fine Arts department at UVic in the 1970s and operated her own
gallery/studio for fine arts in Fan Tan Alley in the 1980s and 90s. Since then,
she has led a quiet, intensely private, always creative family life.
Her days were drenched in art. Her works encompassed drawing, painting, pastels,
ceramic figurines, textiles and most recently a splendid array of amusing, somewhat
erotic collages. She was also a gourmet. Her culinary artistry bewitched the palate and
charmed the heart. Sandra delighted all who met her. She was our glorious and adored
matriarch.
In keeping with her wishes and respecting her desire for privacy there will be no formal memorial services. In lieu of
such, the family recommends donations to the Victoria Hospice.
