Sarah Allison 'Sally' Newman

At the age of 95, beloved mother and grandmother Sally passed away peacefully on November 13, 2016 at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. Born July 31, 1921 in Ottawa to parents William and Sarah Hunter of tough Scottish and UEL stock, Sally moved with her family to homestead in the Birch Hills area of Saskatchewan. She was an excellent academic student and earned first-class distinction in her Home Economics studies at the University of Saskatchewan where she graduated in 1945. Sally specialized in dietetics and eventually moved to Vancouver where she met and married John Garrett Newman. The family settled for many years in Chilliwack and later in South Delta. Sally worked for a few years as a dietician at Woodlands School in New Westminster from which she took early retirement. In retirement, she lived a quiet life and pursued various interests, particularly arts & crafts, excelling at tatting and crocheting. A friendly but reserved person, Sally was devoted to her family and adored her grandchildren Jesse and Jenny. She reveled in her family's exploits and especially loved being a football fan when Grandson Jesse played in the CFL. Later in life, Sally shared a house with her son Bob, daughter-in-law Virginia, and Virginia's children Mandie and Emma. This shared living brought her a lot of contentment. Sally's last few years were spent at Marrion Village (Baptist Housing). Here, she was well liked by her neighbours and staff. After a series of health issues through which Sally fought tenaciously, she finally succumbed to congestive heart failure. She spent her last days in Victoria Hospice where she received wonderful care and compassion, and passed away with Bob at her side. Sally's ashes will be interred with her parents' ashes in St. Luke's cemetery in a private service.
