Steve ( or "Frizz") passed away peacefully after a hard fought battle with demonic cancer early in the morning on February 27th in the Victoria Hospice.
Steve, who originally hailed from Calgary (Viscount Bennett High School) fell in love with Victoria when he attended U Vic. Following graduation Steve became an Educator, Coach, Mentor, Counsellor, and finally a Vice Principal in various schools on the Island after completing a M. A. through San Diego State. He enjoyed his career and his kids. He encourages others to love what they do, and each other. Steve savoured (and recommends) early retirement because, as he found out, life can be just too short.
Steve loved life, sports, coaching (even with their respective curve balls) and he was loved. He enjoyed life and the people he met along the way.
Steve is survived by his his Mother Doris, the love of his life Christina Xin Li, dear friend Leslie Simpson (and her mother Vivian), one brother, a sister, a niece, a nephew, three aunts (including his Godmother Pat) and numerous cousins. He is also survived by a bounty of colleagues, friends, good neighbours, students and students who became friends.
Steve survived his first round with cancer in 2008 only to be stricken again in 2016. Along that journey he met and became friends with a number of medical professionals who worked tirelessly to help him. The family would like to thank all of the medical staff who cared for him with special thanks to Dr. Kier Macmillan, Dr. John Samphire, the B.C. Cancer Agency and the wonderful staff at Victoria Hospice.
It was very fitting that Steve was transported from home to hospice by an ambulance driven by a former student (Paris Younger) who went above and beyond to comfort him.
Steve will miss (and be missed by) man's best friend Huego who was by his side until the end.
As per his instructions, no memorial service has been planned but hopefully, friends will raise a glass in his honour...
