Stewart (Stew) was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan to loving parents, Willam and Bertha (Bill and Betty). He grew up on the family farm in Eastend, Saskatchewan with his younger brother, Dwight, where he spent his time riding horseback and exploring the area on long rides. Stew loved the rodeo events and competed in calf roping and even bull riding.
His connection to farming drove him to a career in Agriculture where he studied at the University of Saskatchewan and earned his bachelor’s degree. Stew started his career as an Agrologist in Wynyard, Saskatchewan where he met his wife, Sharon Fensom. In Wynyard, Stew and Sharon lived on an acreage, raised horses, rode snowmobiles and started their family, with their two sons, Jarret and Travis. Stew and Sharon were active with the Kinsmen service group in their community, working with the annual Tel-a-Miracle fundraising telethon.
The family moved to Melfort, Saskatchewan and Stew continued his career living in the city and continuing to work with the Kinsmen and 4-H and later with the Rotary Group. Stew had many hobbies and interests outside of work and community service; gardening, coin collecting, carpentry, hiking, curling and cross-country skiing to name a few. Stew also served as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts and took his son, Jarret, to the Boy Scout Jamboree in Prince Edward Island. Summer holidays were spent camping around Saskatchewan and one epic road trip across the entire country in a motorhome to take his family through Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and all the way to the easternmost point of Newfoundland.
Stew finished his career in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan pivoting from traditional agriculture to support the budding demand for specialized livestock, working with farmers raising bison, ostrich and llamas. He continued working with Rotary, working to organize fundraisers and community projects and later served as local President. Stew continued to nurture his large garden and grew most of the vegetables for the family during the summers and enough potatoes to last through the winters. He enjoyed the natural beauty of Northern Saskatchewan, spending time hiking and fishing in the summers and continuing with cross-country skiing in the winter.
When it was time for retirement, Stew and Sharon fed their travel bug, taking trips to Australia, Ireland and Guatemala and took cruises around the Caribbean and Central/South America and a river cruise through Eastern Europe. They chose Victoria, British Columbia as the ultimate backdrop for their retirement years where they were able to enjoy the beauty of the Inner Harbor every day. Stew continued with Rotary and took up lawn bowling, likely due to the close proximity of the lawn bowling greens to their apartment.
Stew was a loving father and grandfather and was so supportive of his family, always there to encourage us, to listen and provide advice. He is survived by wife Sharon, his two sons, Jarret and Travis, and his granddaughter, Jessie. He is pre-deceased by infant children John, Sarah, and Patrick, his father Bill, mother Betty, and brother Dwight.
