Sylvia Potter
April 21, 1929 – October 14, 2018 in Victoria, British Columbia
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful Mom, who was ushered into the arms of her everlasting Saviour this past Sunday evening. As she breathed her last breath we knew that she was in a far better place with no more sickness and no more pain; and that we are so thankful for.
Mom was born in Lasham, UK on April 21, 1929. Her family immigrated to Galt, ON in 1949. Our dad, Bill Potter met Mom at the Bowling Alley in Hamilton where he bowled each week. They dated and in 1951 Mom and Dad were married in Galt and moved into their first home in Hamilton, ON. We know she enjoyed the many, many years she was given to love and travel about with Dad. They were able to spend 49 years together enjoying each others company until dad passed away Oct 4th, 1999.
She had a deep love for Karen (Vic Corrigan) and Deb (Will Minion). She loved skyping with her grandchildren, Daniel (Ashley), Kelly (Paul) & Mike (Kaila) and being able to keep up with the news on all her 9 special great-grandchildren: Logan, Grayson, Maiah, Addy, Benjamin, Calvin, Fiona, Keegan & Ella.
She loved the Lord and served him with her whole heart in Children's ministry and Adult Fellowships at Westside Baptist Church in Hamilton, ON. For over 30 years Mom served as a volunteer at Fair Havens Bible Conference near Beaverton, ON. Her first volunteer position was to work in the Ceramics Classes, then supervise. She would “fix” ladies ceramic creations to make problematic ceramics into works of art, so no one went away upset about how their creations looked. Mom always loved gardening. She had been to Horticultural School as a late teen, then worked as a Florist until she was married. For many years after Ceramics ended at Fair Havens she made the fountain gardens at Fair Havens beautiful for the many people that came and vacationed there throughout the summer months. Her cheery hello and contagious smile as she came up from planting flowers or plucking weeds in the garden was always a welcome reminder to the people passing by of her great love for gardening and the beautiful ‘pops’ of colour she created for their enjoyment.
For the past 4 years Mom lived close to Karen & Vic at the Glenshiel, in Victoria, BC. Karen looked out for Mom and was her constant companion and driver for special teas, bazaars, Imax movies and Dr’s appointments. Mom enjoyed Silver Threads on Fridays and always enjoyed the friendships with the ladies that attended to do crafts together. She attended the Beacon Communities Church in Victoria and always said to Karen that she enjoyed the word that Pastor Joe gave on Sundays just as much as she enjoyed the special speakers that came to Fair Havens to preach. When Mom entered the hospital last December, then into a Nursing Home in April, Karen was often asked if she was in the healthcare system as she knew better what to do with Mom to keep her happy and content than the nursing staff. Karen was Mom’s advocate and faithfully took on the roll of ‘mom’ to our Mom; and for that Deb is truly thankful.
