Terence Whiteley

October 12, 1927 — November 21, 2022

Terence Whiteley was born to Albert and Emma Whiteley in Bolton, Yorkshire, England October 12, 1927. His mother Emma succumbed to tuberculosis soon after his birth and his father Albert was deployed with the British army to India, leaving Terry to be brought up through his early childhood by his maternal grandparents in York. At nine years old Terry's father Albert remarried Sis and they sent for Terry to join them in India, at which time Terry began attending the Lawrence Military Boarding School at Sanawar. The heat of this new country birthed the dream of adventuring through Canada's snow covered forests. Terry served with the British army in India until partition, returning to England on the last troop ship out of Bombay in 1948. Terry met his wife Connie, the sister of an old school friend, and they were married in England in 1953. Their first son, Simon, was born in Oxford in 1956 where Terry worked as a forester. Terry emigrated with his young family to Alberta, Canada in the fall of 1957, where he subsequently began work as a forester/ ranger for the Alberta Forest Service. Their second son, Timothy, was born in Edmonton in 1960. In 1961 they moved to Hinton where their third son, Stephen, was born in 1962. Terry started the now iconic junior forest wardens (JFW) of Alberta and served as their Chief Warden, travelling throughout Alberta to initiate new JFW units and running their yearly summer camps. Terry transferred to the Department of Youth where he developed and managed Blue Lake Centre, providing outdoor education including extreme sports opportunities before eventually moving into an advisory role with the provincial parks program. Terry and Connie enjoyed their retirement as snowbirds travelling around Arizona before eventually moving to Vancouver Island in 2012 where they spent their remaining years together. Terry passed away in Langford November 21, 2022. He was predeceased by his wife Connie in 2020. He is held in loving memory by his sister Lin Tavlin and his children: Simon and Patricia (Robin, Richard, Hannah, Terry), Timothy and Marjorie (Samuel, Michael) and Stephen (Mario, Angelica, Geovani, Callie) along with 12 great grandchildren.
