Thora Benedicte
Bajard
May 7, 1938 — Aug 26, 2026
Victoria
Thora – a tale of two stories, one in English, one in French.
Our Thora died last week. Thora Bajard, née Thora Benedicte Sodemann, was born in Odense, Denmark.
She was 17 when she chose to go to Grenoble, “Capital of the Alps”, ready to dive into French culture, skiing and the student life that led her to meet Yves. Within a year, this insanely tall man with dark bushy hair had met her family, they had married, he had learned Danish, and her life in French began.
Oh, the sixties! What it was to be the only woman on a dam site in Khashm el-Girba, with two-month-old Christine. Then off to Zurich, where Anne Catherine was born, before heading to Beirut, birthplace of our baby sister Dominique. But that’s the daughters’ perspectives, our births. For Thora, it was glorious times. The city was bursting with life, a crossroads of cultures that she often navigated alone as Yves worked long days in his male-dominated world of engineers. Then came the job with Kampsax, as the design of the port of Beirut started. Thora felt whole. And oh, did she ever grieve in 2020 at the Beirut port explosion! Beirut, so beautiful, so rich in life and culture, had suffered enough already!
Thora and Yves then lived in Athens, danced the sirtaki, allowed us to play hide and seek between amphoras in Crete and Mykonos, running through the tall wild grass and flower fields. Memories of pelicans in one place, and an octopus in another. Thora and Yves always had their eyes wide open; they were a fountain of knowledge that gathered and shared its flow. Thanks to them we know the flowers of Garibaldi, the secrets of the North Sea, the rocks of the Similkameen River, the history of the Malouines (Falklands/Malvinas), Madame Bovary, les Trois mousquetaires, and so much more. Learning was a way of life; appreciating was the pulse.
A renewed stint in Grenoble, for three years this time, was heaven for Thora, as she dove into student life again, starting her master’s, and driving her Citroën 2CV, while Yves finalized his dissertation. We don’t know how they juggled that with three little girls at home and in music school, but there we were, in the Olympic Village of 1968.
Then the seventies: the discovery of this continent, Thora’s dedication to education in North Vancouver, then francophone education and curriculum development that would respect Indigenous rights, history and aspirations. The ‘90s, the move from Vancouver to Victoria… there is just too much to say, Thora’s life has been extremely extremely extremely full!
2013. Deep loss, Yves, and Dominique, huge pain, yes, but Thora carried those losses on her shoulders, in her heart, and developed a new and vibrant set of communities, friendships that warm us to the core today. Full circle to enjoying life, as she did in Odense, Grenoble, Beirut, everywhere she went. Life changes did not stop the joy.
May you travel to new spaces, Thora, daring, courageous, as you did when taking your car on those long journeys between Mont-de-Marsan and Beirut, or Liverpool and Vancouver with us in tow!
A Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, 3873 Swan Lake Rd, Victoria, B.C. Please write your thoughts or interest in joining the celebration to ThoraCelebration@gmail.com

Thora.
