Tora Lise Sverdrup Thyvold (10 Dec 1960 - 23 June 2017) predeceased by her parents Unnie and Olav, survived by brothers Olav, (nephew Olav jr) , Magnus (niece Beatrix), family in Canada, Norway and Guatemala, friends Mary Christian, Sasha Norman and Kristen Smith.
As a young child, Tora moved from Prince George to Victoria settling near the ocean where her lifelong love affair with the sea began. Learning from her father and following in his footsteps, she became an accomplished sailor and swimmer. On her father's passing she was proud to take ownership of his sail boat" Gjoa "the boat on which she had learned her sailing skills. Tora loved her family very much she has two surviving brothers Olav and Magnus and one nephew Olav Jr. and one niece Beatrix. Tora graduated from Esquimalt Secondary School, attended Camosun College graduating with an RN diploma. She first worked on 6D North at Victoria General Hospital, then later took the BCIT Critical Care Course and began her 25 year working career in the Intensive Care Unit at the VGH helmcken hospital until 2014 when she had to leave her job due to the onset of her illness. Tora loved dogs and became a life member of Greater Victoria Dog Obedience Training Club where for many years she volunteered as a trainer's assistant and many other jobs. Tora and Mary shared a home and life with a succession of dogs. First there was Tora's beloved yellow lab Boston and later another yellow lab named Jessie ,together with other dog housemates Winston, Maxie and Sam. Sadly Jessie died just 5 days after Tora , and now they will be forever together...
Tora had an amazing aptitude to figure out how things worked and could fix and build just about anything. She loved her house projects ,she also had a vintage red MG Sports car that she loved to bits and always wanted to restore. She loved camping and sailing and liked to tinker with the RV , "The Bus" and the sailboat. She enjoyed many sailing trips with her best friend Sasha and her two sons . Tora loved to drive. (She was always "THE Driver " on any adventure or trip). One time she borrowed the 8 seater van to take a group of nurses to the Chemainus Theater in a snow storm and the Malahat was closed due to ice. Everyone was unsure about going, except Tora. She took charge and got us there safely via the Brentwood/Mill Bay ferry so we could all enjoy "It's a Wonderful Life."
Special thanks to Dr How, and Victoria Hospice for fantastic care and to Tora's friends who arranged 24 hour support for her during her last days.
Donations in Tora's name could be made to Victoria Hospice . A celebration of Tora's life will be held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Oct 21st between 1pm - 3pm. Please RSVP to olav.thyvold@polarstar.com
