Vera Schetterer

d. April 12, 2016

Vera Schetterer (Smith) (Williams) November 2, 1922 - April 12, 2016 passed away peacefully in Victoria BC surrounded by family who loved her.
Vera was born and brought up Calgary Alberta. She grew up during the war and would often share stories about the mandatory city black outs to prepare for potential air raids.
She then married Frank Smith (pre-deceased 1996) and moved to South Africa where her son Mark was born. The family returned to Calgary and Vera had a daughter Jan.
Vera had a great sense of adventure. She loved to try new things. She went on many trips back to South Africa. She had many tales to share about this time in her life, sitting on live crocodiles and shooing away the monkeys to name a few. She had a good soprano voice and at one point played the piano proficiently. She would travel to the mainland and the states to visit her grandchildren. Dozens of cookies were baked during this time as well as numerous road trips to MacDonald's for ice cream.
Vera worked as a secretary for many years. She was a secretary for the BC Provincial Government as well as The Cranbrook Alliance Church. In addition, she used her administrative skills to work on numerous church councils and charity boards.
Frank and Vera moved to Victoria, BC in 1986 where they lived until his death in 1996. Vera was fortunate to be able to stay at Luther Court and that is where she met her husband Fritz Schetterer. They both lived at Luther Court and enjoyed cards and going for scenic drives. Vera was an active member in the Colwood Pentecostal Church as well as the Good Shepard Lutheran Church.
Her immediate family: Fritz Schetterer, Mark and Heather Smith, Jan and Gerry Wieder, Rolf and Tracy Schetterer, Fred Schetterer will miss her. Vera left behind a proud legacy of five grandchildren (Luke, Emily, Laura, Colin and Geoff) and three great grandchildren. (Nola, Addy and Bentley) The middle great grandchild, Addy, was born on her birthday. This is truly a gift.
Special thanks to the staff of Luther Court where Vera resided for 22 years as well as Royal Jubilee hospital and Dr. David Bell for the great care and kindness that was extended to her.
Vera's life is an example of what it is to serve the Lord, love your family and do unto others. Her kind and loving spirit will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held in early May. When we walk with the Lord In the light of His word What a glory He sheds on our way While we do His good will He abides with us still And with all who will trust and obey Trust and obey For there's no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey Then in fellowship sweet We will sit at His feet Or we'll walk by His side in the way What He says we will do Where He sends we will go Never fear, only trust and obey
