Violet Emily Ross was born in Onoway Alberta May 11, 1929 to James H. J. Yeoman and Susan Brand Duthie. Passed peacefully in her sleep, into the arms of the deceased family members on March 8, 2026, just two months short of her 97th Birthday!
Violet spent the last four years of her life thriving at Beckley Farm Lodge, where she felt truly at home. She often spoke with gratitude about the wonderful care she received, the delicious meals , the warm and welcoming community, and the many activities she enjoyed - especially Bingo and Happy Hour.
Violet was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Douglas Murray Ross, in September 2013, aftrr many devoted years caring for him. She is lovingly remembered by daughter Susan Ross, granddaughter Candice Zerb, of Victoria, her sister Sandra Osborne (Robbie) of Kamloops, nephew Kristopher (Jamie) grand- nieces Emersyn and Kinley of High River, Alberta
As an infant,Violet moved with her family to Jasper Alberta when her grandfather Syd Yeoman purchased the Jasper Steam Laundry. During the second world her father Jim served as an aircraft mechanic at Pat Bay in Sidney BC. During those years Violet attended high school and welcomed her baby Sister Sandra whom she lovingly helped raise. After the war they all returned to Jasper where Violet soon met and partnered with the love of her life Doug.
Violet was a strong, resilient woman who embraced life's many changes with courage and optimism! Together, she and Doug reinvented themselves many times throughout their 62 years together. One of their first adventures took them to Prince Rupert BC where they lived with Doug's grandparents. Their daughter Susan was born there in 1950 in an upstairs bedroom of the family home.
Before long, Violet found herself out on the rugged west coast waters helping Doug operate their commercial fishing trawler the Laura L. II. She loved to tell the story of how she kept things running while Doug napped in the tiny cabin, with baby Susan tucked safely into the bottom drawer of the dresser.
In 1953, the family of 3 returned to Jasper, where they rejoined the Ross and Yeoman families in the beautiful Rocky Mountain they both loved so much. When she wasn't curling or cheering on local hockey, Violet worked worked full time at the Jasper Post Office. She loved the work and knew everyone by both name and Postal Box number.
Doug kept the township streets and highways clear all year round until 1964 when another adventure took the couple on the road. Pipeline construction across Canada became their next chapter, with Kamloops as their home base. Violet embraced this life, wholeheartedly tending her garden, enjoying their swimming pool, baking and canning the fruit and vegetables she grew. Their home was a favoured destination for Alberta relatives during the hot Kamloops summers. All the while she frequently towed their home on wheels between construction sights across the Country!
In 1979, Violet and Doug finally settled in Victoria. Doug returned to the sea! He loved his varied experiences on the water while with the Canada Coast Guard, initially on the weather ship the George Darby and later tending buoys along the coast. During these years, Violet stayed busy managing their apartment building on Croft street, bowling at Mayfair lanes and spending treasured time with Candice and Susan.
Retirement brought even more adventures. With their fifth wheel in tow, Violet and Doug travelled throughout Canada and much of the United States, always staying closely connected with friends and family in both BC and Alberta.
The family is eternally grateful to the compassionate team at Beckley Farm Lodge, for the love, care, and dignity they gave Violet in her final years.
At Violet's request, there will be no service. Those wishing to honour her memory may consider making a donation to Broadmead Care - Beckley Farm Lodge in Victoria BC
