Violet Jane Steffen died at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, on March 12, 2016 due to complications with a heart condition. She was 75. Violet was born on August 5, 1940, in Pelly, Saskatchewan to her parents, Mary and John. As a youth she lived with her parents and sister Carrol in the town of Ymir in the West Kootenay district of British Columbia. Violet moved to Victoria as a young lady, where she found employment as a telephone operator at the Empress Hotel. It was at the Empress that Violet met her husband, Hans J. Steffen. The couple were married in Toronto, Ontario, in 1962. After traveling in Europe, they settled in Victoria. Violet worked at the University of Victoria before having children. Violet loved nature and enjoyed being outdoors. She was an avid reader as well as a patient, caring, and supportive mom. Violet is survived by her daughter, Martina Lianne Steffen, of Victoria; and her son Mark Steffen.
