It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Kok-Seng Shee, fondly known as Wil, on June 20, 2024, in Victoria, BC, Canada, after a courageous seven-year battle with colon cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born on November 19, 1976, in Seria, Brunei, Wil was the beloved son of Phillip Shee and Lily Chiaw. In his early years, he moved with his family to Vancouver, Canada, where he grew up alongside his siblings Ronnie, Patrick, and Jenny Shee.

Wil had a passion for life that was evident in everything he did. From a young age, he loved playing video games and performed in school musicals, showcasing his vibrant and creative spirit. His career was marked by his significant contributions to the BC Government, where he was a pioneer in the Government Digital Experience (GDX) division. His dedication and innovative approach left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community he served.

Outside of his professional life, Wil was a man of many passions. He was an avid participant in outdoor activities, including marathons, trail runs, and hikes with friends and family. He bravely took on the Tough Mudder obstacle course and was actively involved in a rowing club.

His love for karaoke was unmatched—Wil could sing anything from Coldplay to Phantom of the Opera, always bringing joy and laughter to those around him. Our epic Rock Band sessions at home were moments of pure joy and camaraderie.

Wil’s love for movies was another defining trait. He was a true movie buff, sharing countless film experiences with loved ones. Memorable outings included watching "Frozen," "La La Land," and "The Greatest Showman," often followed by laughs and ice cream at McDonald's.

Despite the challenges he faced, Wil remained a beacon of positivity, humor, and kindness. His battle with cancer only highlighted his strength and resilience. He shared a unique and humorous bond with his friends and family, finding light even in the darkest moments.

Wil’s generosity and love for life extended beyond his immediate family. He was a role model to the younger generation, always making time to join the kids' table during family gatherings, sharing laughs and creating lasting memories. His friends cherished his young-at-heart nature, and he was a beloved figure among his niece/nephews

Wil is survived by his loving mother Lily Chiaw, his siblings Ronnie Shee, Patrick Shee, and Jenny Shee, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever hold his memory dear.

A celebration of Wil’s life was held on July 20, 2024, at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park, where family and friends gathered to honor his memory with a BBQ, fulfilling Wil’s wish expressed during his time in palliative care.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the BC Cancer Agency and the staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital for their exceptional care and support throughout Wil’s journey. Special gratitude goes to the friends and family who stood by Wil, offering love and strength during his toughest times.

Wil’s ashes were laid to rest at Ocean View Cemetery, with loved ones gathering to say their final farewells. His spirit, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the BC Cancer Agency in Wil’s memory.
