As government officials change positions, we are keeping up with new people in new positions within government that have the ability to submit changes for legislative consideration. To that end we received a note today from the new person within government and the response in part is noted below, but the bottom line is no changes in the legislation on the horizon. All the public can do is continue to put pressure on thier MLA's.
"In regard to your questions about upcoming amendments to CIFSA and specifically whether the Province is considering approving Alkaline Hydrolysis as an accepted form of cremation in BC, while future changes to CIFSA are under consideration, such work is being prioritized in relation to other government policy priorities and is not moving forward at this time."
"While the Province fully supports the development and use of technology that reduces our environmental footprint, the technology has implications that are broader than the Cremation, Internment and Funeral Services Act. In order to pursue such changes, additional research, public policy analysis and stakeholder engagement is required on topics that include environmental, local government zoning, worker safety, operator training, respectful handling of human remains, health and consumer protection considerations."

We have been waiting to get a face to face meeting with Andrew Weaver of Green Party and further ask him to send a letter of support to Ministry Farnworth on this initiative. Although not surprised, but very disappointed, this is the response I received when I requested the meeting.
Thank you for your email to MLA Weaver. Unfortunately, due to MLA Weaver's extremely full schedule with legislative and constituency work, we are unable to accommodate your meeting request.
Disillusioned with politicians..
But the mission must go on and we will continue the fight to - if you have not yet had the chance to sign our petition, please go to our Face Book page to sign.

I guess in part COVID is partly to blame for the absolute silence on the issue of AH in British Columbia. As our government sits quietly by another jurisdiction in Canada has approved the process, namely, the Northwest Territories. You may be interested to know that Earth's Option is the only funeral provider in British Columbia at this time, offering recomposition of the body using the recomposition company in Washington State, effective November 2020. So far to date we have been frustrated with Minister Mike Farnworth's office who is the Minister who could make Bio-Cremation a reality in BC, very simply by creating a definition in the regulations that would define cremation and include Alkaline Hydrolysis. His office is using stall tactics saying that becaue no other interest groups feel this is a priority and the Ministry is unwilling to divert any resources to making the simple change in the regulation. Unfortunately the BC Government talks about our climate action plan but does little to do anything about it except implement new taxes....but I digress. On a positive note, I have had some good conversations and support from my MLA, Mitzi Dean, the Green Party of Canada candidate David Merner (nice guy by the way), and a letter of support from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
I knew this was going to be an uphill battle, but I honestly thought the Province would see this as a no brainer!
In the meantime, if you wish to help the cause, I encourage you to write Minister Farnworth at Mike.Farnworth.MLA@leg.bc.ca, and copy anyone at the Legislature that you feel has a sincere interest in the environment.
Till next time!
Chris

We heard news today that Newfoundland is approving Aquamation in their Province, so we now have 4 Canadian Provinces on board.....here in BC, well no progress to with Government but we are circulating an online petition and have several interest groups now publicly supporting the initiative. Also, with the help of the Green Party of Canada candidate David Merner, we hope to get a face to face with BC Green Party officials soon.
