Burial Services

Burial Service Options

A traditional burial service often includes a visitation, followed by a funeral ceremony held at a place of worship or another meaningful location. The casket is usually present during both events, and families can decide whether it will be open or closed. Final placement of the casket may involve ground burial or entombment in a mausoleum crypt above ground. Religious customs and family preferences often influence these choices. Other decisions may include whether embalming is needed, selecting a casket, choosing a cemetery, and designing a grave marker.

Types of Cemeteries

Monument Cemeteries
These are the classic cemeteries where upright headstones, typically made from granite or marble, are placed at each burial site. Monuments can range from simple markers to elaborate, detailed memorials, offering families a wide variety of customization options.

Lawn Cemeteries
In lawn cemeteries, each grave is marked by a flat plaque set flush with the ground. While the plaque design may be standardized, families usually have input on the wording and layout. This style of cemetery provides a clean, uniform appearance.

Mausoleums
A mausoleum is a self-contained structure designed to hold one or more crypts for above-ground burial. These can serve as individual, family, or community memorials. Mausoleums are often seen as a dignified and lasting alternative to traditional ground burial.

Columbariums
Columbariums are structures or walls with niches designed to hold cremation urns. For those who choose cremation but still want a permanent memorial space, a columbarium offers a respectful and accessible place for family and friends to visit.

Natural or Green Cemeteries
These burial sites are focused on environmentally friendly practices. Set in natural settings like woodlands or meadows, they avoid traditional materials such as concrete vaults and large headstones. Markers, if used, are often natural elements like rocks, plants, or biodegradable materials. Green cemeteries appeal to those who value sustainability and a return to nature.
