Terramation

What Is Terramation?

Terramation, also referred to as human composting, is an eco-friendly and respectful alternative to traditional burial and cremation. This process uses organic materials and time to naturally return the body to the earth as nutrient-rich soil.

How Does It Work?

Terramation involves placing the body in a vessel with biodegradable materials. This method is used by our partner, Return Home. They work with materials such as straw, alfalfa, and sawdust. Over the course of about 30 days, the body's natural microbes begin to break it down. Once the composting stage is complete, any non-organic elements are removed, and the soil rests for an additional 30 days to stabilize.

The process typically begins with a laying-in ceremony, where loved ones gather to honor the individual as the body is placed into the vessel. This ceremony can be attended in person or virtually, offering a meaningful moment of reflection and farewell.

At the end of the process, the soil can be returned to the family or used to nourish the earth in a designated natural setting such as The Woodland, a serene forest space at the Return Home facility in Washington.
